When you are dieting, holidays are often a time to be miserable trying to keep to the diet or a time to let go and splurge, after all it doesn’t count until the weigh in when you come home. If you are trying to keep to the diet then when away you might be trying to count your calories, points, sins or healthy eating and maybe trying to be as active as possible to make up for extra food and drink. None of this is inherently wrong except for the fact that you often miss the pleasure of just enjoying something different maybe relaxing with your family, trying out a new cuisine and when you come home and step on the scales the numbers might well have gone up anyway. On the other side people who treat the holiday as just a time for eating and drinking as much as they can because they are on holiday and know that one of the main enjoyments in going on holiday is this letting go of the diet. Again not inherently wrong but also maybe missing the other parts of going on holiday to enjoy relaxing time with family and friends, perhaps explore an area or culture, because the holiday may be all about the food and drink and then when you come home the shame and guilt of the weigh in.
What if there is another way, a way you can go on holiday enjoy time spent with family and friends, enjoy scenery, new culture, different foods maybe different physical activity and no shame or guilty when you come home. How does that sound. When you start to eat in a way that is mainly about hunger then that is what happens. Don’t get me wrong you might overeat at times if the food is really good and you might have a little more to drink as you don’t have to get up for work in the morning but as its mostly about hunger and fullness you know you can eat whatever you want both at home or on holiday. The overeating tends to lose its appeal as you want to enjoy your holiday not feel overfull the whole time. When you follow this approach your self-worth is not tied up with how your body looks therefore you are not as concerned if you enjoy a dessert just because you have never had it before and wanted to try it even though you were fairly full. So why not give the non-diet way to health a go you might find that holidays become even more fun and enjoyable and you don’t have to spend the rest of the year trying to lose the weight you put on when you were away you might even find that you might exercise even more on holiday not worried about getting into the swimwear for a swim or other activities because it’s all about doing stuff that’s fun and not worrying whether anyone else is looking at you.
